Last year from mid September to mid December, Conservative controlled East Sussex County Council staged a well publicised consultation on the future of libraries in East Sussex. They said in the document 'Our proposals have not yet been decided' and then promised to 'once the consultation is complete and the results have been analysed to present revised proposals to Cabinet in March 2018.
Well, at the budget setting meeting of ESCC held on 6 February, the Conservatives used their majority to pass a budget for their next financial year to pre-empt any such report because the budget includes the c. £700000 savings which Conservatives were proposing by closing seven libraries including the one at Ore and stopping completely the mobile library service which currently serves 88, yes 88, separate urban and rural communities in the county. So much for Conservative consultation then. I just wonder how many voices in support the County received for the closure proposals the Conservatives clearly are hell bent on implementing. May be when the report is finally published we shall see just what the council tax payers of East Sussex really wanted from their Council. But that will be too late.
