Letter to the Press

January 4, 2022 6:48 PM
By Stephen Hardy, MBE in Letter to Bexhill Observer

Dear Editor

It is now one year since the UK left the European Union, well not quite, because a part of the UK, i.e. Northern

Ireland, is still in the EU's single market.

My belief and it is shared by an ever increasing number ofUK citizens according to every opinion poll that has been

published recently, is that Brexit is a calamitous mistake.

This is exemplified by the fact we have left the world's largest free trading block and thus have introduced tariffs

on what we import, making every UK citizen and most businesses worse off: also we have lost our right to

live, work, study and travel across the EU, which anyone aged 48 and younger have enjoyed since they were born.

Even worse is the fact that Brexit has shown our political system to be rotten at its core; the culture of lies which

persuaded people to vote for Brexit has led to lying becoming the common currency of political debate,

together with corruption seeping into the mainstream of our lives. Just look at the way contracts at vastly inflated

prices were handed out to friends of ministers, using a 'VIP lane' to approve them without competition.

Can we possibly hope that 2022 will be any better?

Yours faithfully
Stephen Hardy
