INSIGHT - The Old Lady of Hypocrisy Street
The Old Lady of Hypocrisy Street
Remember head lines on 6 February this year: the Bank of England Governor, Andrew Bailey called for everyone to show ‘quite clear wage restraint.’
So do you think that his instruction has been observed at the Bank of England itself? The answer is a ‘quite clear’ no, except for Andrew Bailey himself. The salaries of senior officials at the Bank were increased by an average of £4300 p.a. at this year’s pay round – and if that was not enough, for people who by general consensus have not been doing a very good job at managing our finances, the bank handed out over £25 million in bonuses to its workers.
Answering a Freedom of Information question, the Bank admitted that 429 of its employees had received ‘performance awards’ in excess of £10000.
And here is another surprise, the Bank’s accounts showed there is a gender gap of more than 18% for those employees getting a bonus.
